Module 1 - Internet Tools

After reading about traceroute on the "How Stuff Works" site, made it seem a little confusing! But the part at the end made it easier to follow, stating that "it's very similar to the process that gets a postal letter from your mailbox to the mailbox of a friend, with routers taking the place of the mail sorters and handlers along the way."

Once i went to the site, http:// network- tools.com/ I typed in curtin.edu.au and found the list of 'hops' from that site to curtin.edu.au ; (i had to insert as an image because when i copy and pasted it, it would not insert as a table only a long list of numbers - which made no sense! & sorry that the image is blurry)

From the results, i found:

- There were 21 hops
- It took about 13ms from the network tools site to curtin.edu.au
- Curtins IP address is 134.7.179.53

I found this task quite simple as well, i guess thats why it is in Module One!
I have never used a site like the network tools one before, it is quite amazing how many little processes there are in one click of the mouse!

Module 1 - FTP

I downloaded FileZilla as instructed, not quite sure of what it was though!
Once installed i opened it and went to recall.curtin.edu.au
After looking through some directory files i found the "readme" file and according to the file CAPITALIZATION MATTERS!

I am not really familiar with this program but i found it quite easy to use and found the file i was looking for really quickly. The main thing i use for the exchanging of files would be email for files/documents/images. I am also familiar with the exchanging of files over programs such as MSN Messenger, or when i was at school i used to exchange files with other students from our laptops via infrared. I found this task simple even though at first i wasn't really sure what to do!

Module 1 - Telnet & Blinkenlights

I have only just started Module One - I have been a bit slack, or busy depending on how you look at it!Reading through the Welcome/Introduction page it all seems a bit daunting to start these tasks, but the information provided to us along the way to complete the tasks makes it all a lot easier to follow!I just did the Telnet task, at first i did not really understand what a Telnet was, or where to find one. I searched Windows Telnet in Google, and didn’t find anything specifically named "Windows Telnet", but i found a lot of options and i chose a Telnet called ZOC Terminal 5.1.

After I downloaded it I wasn’t really sure how to use it but there was a "Help" option which I read on how to connect to Telnet. I figured out how to do it and connected to the Deakin Library, typed in Bennahum in the Author section, with it coming up with two options. I then chose the print option and filled out my email address when prompted. I then checked my Curtin email address and found the email in there. I found it quite interesting to access the Deakin Library via a Telnet. I expected it to be something like Internet Explorer but it was completely different and did not even open through Internet Explorer, it was a whole other application itself. I then had a look at towel.blinkenlights.nl, which i found interesting as well. It said for better coloured options to download another Telnet, but i just continued with the one i was using. I thought it was amazing how they had made the Star Wars animation through nothing but symbols that exist on the keyboard. That would take a lot of hard work and time to be able to complete something like that! I am not a fan of Star Wars so did not watch the entire thing, but i was quite impressed with what i saw.

I still do not have a great understanding or knowledge of Telnet but now i have some idea of what kind of things it is capable of, and the types of sites we can connect to. I can kind of see how Telnet was one of the first Internet Applications, as it seems quite basic as opposed to the web or other internet applications i have seen before. It is interesting how it provides people with a very important capacity to treat distant computers as if they were 'on their desktop'.

Overall this task has given me some idea of what these Modules are going to be like. Obviously not all of them are going to have anything to do with Telnet, but following the steps provided with this task has given me some reassurance that the rest of the modules will be simple to follow.

Learning Log - Top 5 tips for new bloggers!

I am new to blogging so i am not really sure what tips to give to others!
I looked up some tips on Google, in hoping to get some tips for myself and for this post!
There were so many tips, one site even gave 101 Tips for New Bloggers, but i picked out some of the ones i thought may be important in writing a blog.

1.) Stay on topic.
Opinions are generally accepted but the content of the items in the blog should all relate to a general theme. Unless you have an uncanny knack for wit, humor or cynicism, the majority of your readers will be interested in the content that relates to a specific defined theme or loosely defined area of interest. In regards to this particular unit, we are required to stay on topic as we have certain criteria we have to fill. We need to record certain details of our progress and to answer certain questions.

2.) Spell checking and proof-reading.
It only takes a few extra moments and can save you from having to make embarrassing explanations. Remember that whatever you publish on the Internet can be found and archived. Think carefully about what you post before doing so.

3.) Edit Your Blog
Going back and editing your blog can be helpful. If you post a blog and then decide you want to take a certain part out, or add something in, then editing the blog will be useful.

4.) Be Creative
Adding some colour, or a nice design, even a photo or two to your blog can make it visually more interesting to view. A boring blank page with black and white isnt going to keep people very interested, unless what they are reading is fascinating!

5.) Plan your entries
Give your entries some thought before posting them!
If you plan a bit of what you are going to say and how you are going to set it out, then the blog will probably be more successful than if you just type in whatever pops into your head regarding that task!

Welcome!

This is my blog set up for my journey in Internet Studies 202.
I have never blogged before, so to start off i am not too sure what i am doing! But it seems pretty straight forward and i think i will get the hang of it pretty quickly.

Good luck to everyone in their learning logs and personal progress in this unit!
Enjoy my blog :)
